Collection Policy for APPAREL MERCHANDISING, DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

General Purpose

Apparel, Merchandising, & Design (AMD) is one of the three majors administered by the Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) department in the College of Human Sciences.  As the department continues to evolve to meet new demands of a global marketplace, so has the AMD program. The collections attempt to strengthen materials in the areas of apparel merchandising, design, and production. There are also areas of emphases in textile and clothing history and textile and clothing preservation. Aspects of textile science such as product performance are also key areas of focus.  In general, the direction of the collection is to support undergraduate education while strengthening support for graduate and faculty research through cooperative liaison relationships between the Library and the Department.  Most undergraduate students take courses in the areas of apparel merchandising, apparel design, and product development. Graduate programs are more extensive as they delve deeper into industry-wide issues such as outsourcing, sustainability, and customer buying behavior. In the future, the collection will be adapted to meet the needs of building relationships between research and the evolving marketplace. The library is in lockstep with the university’s strong push for innovation and seeks to build resources to support innovative pursuits. Current program strengths include a rapidly growing collection to support business, merchandising and the global market for apparels and apparel products. There is also an excellent historic costume collection and related preservation, conservation, and museum studies materials.
