Environmental justice and environmental racism

This is a topic-guide for environmental justice and environmental racism. Inside it you will find brief introductions to the topic, helpful videos, suggested readings, and links to Iowa State University Library resources.

Mining and drilling

Environmental justice concerns related to mining and drilling often overlap with other areas of concern: air and water quality, soil contamination, and radiation from waste products. Opposition to drilling, and shale gas extraction in particular, is frequently an example of the "Not In My Backyard" (NIMBY) phenomenon, with areas that are poorer and/or home to more people of color being much more likely to be negatively affected.
