Semi-Famous Cases

Sibley, Iowa (and other pungent towns in Iowa)

In 2018 a resident of Sibley, Iowa created a website called "sibleystinks.com" to draw attention to the foul odors coming from the agricultural processing plant located in his downtown. This case is most famous for triggering a first amendment lawsuit regarding the resident's right to complain about his town but the cause of the complaint, "noxious fumes and odors", is an environmental justice issue as it affected the town's residents ability to access and breathe clean air.

Sibley isn't the only town in Iowa dealing with foul odors as both meat processing and rendering plants as well as hog farms produce noxious smells. In fact most of Iowa is subject to some especially pungent days, usually due to the seasonal spreading of manure on agricultural fields.
