Bhopal Union Carbide Plant Disaster

The Bhopal disaster is frequently referred to as the worst industrial disaster of all time. In December 1984 tons of toxic gas were accidentally released from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, resulting in thousands of deaths and widespread illness and pollution lasting decades. The hardest hit areas were (and continue to be) the slums immediately adjacent to the plant.
