Learn how to navigate, incorporate, and use Course Reserves in your class for increased course affordability and copyright management.

What is Controlled Digital Lending (CDL)?

Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) is a developing practice which allows libraries to lend a digital copy of a physical resource in a "lend like print" manner - that is, in the same way in which they lend the physical resource itself.

The short video "Control Digital Lending Explained" gives a more detailed explanation.

Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) Policy

Course Reserves will allow CDL for out-of-print physical books that are not available as ebooks and are required to complete course work in a class.

How it works:

  1. 1. The number of digital copies is limited to the number of physical copies the Library owns.
  2. 2: Each physical copy becomes unavailable while the CDL copy is available.
  3. 3. Users are limited to 1 person per digital copy at a time for up to 3 hours, this mimics the traditional Course Reserves checkout period.
  4. 4, This is a view-only file, no copying or downloading and compatible with assistive technology.
  5. 5. Only available to ISU students, faculty, and staff – users will need to sign into their library account.
  6. 6. A password is required to view the file – it is case-sensitive and listed in the Library catalog record
  7. 7.  A waitlist is available – users will receive a notification when the file is available at their ISU email address.
