ISU Veterinary Medicine Student Pioneers

This guide will highlight some of the early students of color who graduated from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and provide resources for further research into these individuals.

Henry Philmon (DVM 1958)

From Davenport, IA.

Henry "Hank" Philmon was a student-athlete, competing Iowa State football and track teams. As a VM1, he received a "630" award in recognition for his outstanding performance in the Oklahoma game during the 1954 football season. (Iowa State Veterinarian, v. 17, no. 2, 1954)

Philmon received a total of six athletic letters in football and track and was the Iowa State athlete to record a broad jump of over 25 feet, which he accomplished in the 1956 Kansas Relays. He also served as one of two student members on the ISU Athletics Council. (Iowa State Veterinarian, v. 18, no. 3, 1956)
