ISU Veterinary Medicine Student Pioneers

This guide will highlight some of the early students of color who graduated from Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and provide resources for further research into these individuals.

M. Lois Calhoun graduated with her DVM in 1939. She was employed in the Department of Anatomy at Iowa State College (University) from 1939-1943.  Calhoun joined the Department of Anatomy at Michigan State College (University) in 1943 and by 1953, Calhoun was Professor and Head of that department. She also served a term as president of the Women's Veterinary Medical Association. (Iowa State Veterinarian, vol. 15, no. 3, 1953)
