Open Educational Resources (OER)

This guide provides information about Open Educational Resources, or OER, including how to find and evaluate them.

Additional Funding Sources for OER

Iowa State University provides an annual mini-grant program which can support instructors as they locate, adapt, or create OER for their courses. However, this funding is limited in both scope and number of awards. The funding sources below have been compiled for those seeking additional support for their open education work.

Tips for Locating Funding:

  • Don't limit yourself to "OER" grants. Funding to support student engagement, pedagogical innovation, and the development of learning objects broadly can all apply to OER projects.
  • Seek funding to support "offshoots" of your project. Perhaps you simply want to implement OER in your classroom. You don't need funding for content development, but you do need the time the implement new content appropriately, and you want to assess the outcome of OER in your classroom.
  • Collaborate with peers. Large-scale education grants are more likely to receive funding when they come from multiple faculty, whether that is a team from a single institution or a team spanning institutions across the U.S. In addition to improving your chances of getting funding, working with peers can help lighten your workload and support wider implementation of the OER project you are working on!
