DataShare: ISU's Open Research Data Repository

Iowa State University’s DataShare is an open access repository for sharing and publishing research data created by Iowa State University scholars and researchers.

Data licensing options

All data published on ISU's DataShare must be assigned a license before it is published. The chosen license governs what other people may do with the published data. At this time, two licenses are available on DataShare: CC-BY, and CC-0. Information on these licenses has been provided below to help you choose the most appropriate license.

CC-BY: Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0

Very Short Summary: as long as it's cited everything is permitted.

Features:

  1. IRREVOCABLE – you cannot change your mind after selecting this
  2. ENSURE YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS – every author must be located and agree
  3. CLEARLY MARK ANY MATERIALS NOT SUBJECT TO THE LICENSE
  4. APPLIES TO COPYRIGHT ONLY (not patent or trademark, for example)
  5. ATTRIBUTION – acknowledgement of title, author, source and license type required
  6. RESTRICTIONS – may not be added to this license

The person who downloads this CAN:

  1. SHARE (copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format)
  2. ADAPT (remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially) and share same (Note: simply changing the media formal and making technical modifications necessary to do so, does not make it Adapted Material

The person who downloads this MUST:

  1. ATTRIBUTION. They must give appropriate credit to the owner(s), provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. They may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor (Iowa State) endorses them or their use.

  6. ATTRIBUTION – no acknowledgment of author is required
  7. RESTRICTIONS – may not be added to this license
