Defined: learning and locating summary information about your topic. Often found in reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, etc.), textbooks, and introductory level sources.

You may use informal sources, such as Wikipedia, but you will need to verify the facts through other sources.

Watch for helpful keywords while doing background research and use them as you search.

This is a good starting place for term papers - to get a basic overview of almost any topic. The collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and reference handbooks.

Full text discussions of current, controversial U.S. public policy issues in a variety of areas.

Wikipedia
Wikipedia can be a good starting point but it should never be the endpoint of your research as some entries are excellent while others are obviously biased or incomplete. Make sure to verify the facts!
