Data management and sharing plan guide

Learn how to write a data management and sharing plan

Data Sharing Requirements

This section of the guide has plain language interpretations of agency policies and regulations. You can use it as a starting point, but you must check your award/contract terms and current policies and regulations to ensure compliance.

Not all funders are covered. Contact datashare@iastate.edu for help with funders not on the guide.

If data can be safely shared, federal agencies expect it to be shared. However there are also justifiable reasons for not sharing data which include:

  • Prohibitive costs
  • Protecting research subjects (human, animal, etc.)
  • Protecting confidential or proprietary information
  • Protecting intellectual property rights
  • Protecting biological or cultural heritage sites and/or knowledge.

Mechanisms for sharing data vary, but can include publication in a disciplinary, institutional, or generalist repository. In general, repositories should align with the Desirable Characteristics of Data Repositories for Federally-funded Research. Your award may also stipulate which repository the data should be shared in.
