LIB 1600: Introduction to College Level Research

Finding, evaluating, and using scholarly information

Assessment

After completing the readings and exercises, students will submit a weekly quiz, which tests three different kinds of knowledge that involve critical thinking and the active application of related skills:

  • Factual knowledge - addresses terminology and definitions from the course readings. Learning is based on remembering or recognizing.
  • Conceptual knowledge - tests students' ability to interpret and apply the principles introduced in the module. Learning is focused on analyzing, comparing, inferring, and application.
  • Procedural knowledge - addresses how and when to use the procedures discussed in the module. Learning is focused on students' ability to apply different research processes and procedures.

Quizzes

There are 5 weekly quizzes in this course. Each quiz is worth 20 points and students must score 80% or higher on each of the five quizzes to be able to move to the next quiz. They have 3 attempts on each quiz to achieve the passing score. Students must successfully pass all five quizzes to be eligible to take the final exam.

Final exam

The final exam is a comprehensive exam that tests the skills students learn for the entire research process. It presents a hypothetical scenario that goes through the research process from beginning to end. Students will go from “I want to research this topic” to “Have I used this source ethically?” The exam is held at the ISU Online Testing Center in the proctored environment. Students must pass the final exam to pass the course.
