Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico's first female President, was sworn into office on Oct. 1, 2024. Before receiving the symbolic presidential staff, la Presidenta was purified / protected by Indigenous women conducting a ritual ceremony in the Zócalo of Mexico City. She was accompanied onstage by Indigenous women from 70 of Mexico's Indigenous communities, as well as by Afromexicana women. The only men onstage were photographers.
