There are a number of tools that researchers use to help keep their reference materials organized. The ISU Library supports the following three options. Check out the following guides to learn more about each tool.
Citation managers, also referred to as reference managers, are powerful tools that, when used correctly, save time by tracking in-text citations in your writing, generating bibliographies, organizing collections of reference articles, and more. Each tool will have slightly different features, but most will have these basic features in common.
To compare features, review the Penn State University Library Citation Tools Comparison Chart.
EndNote is used by many researchers at ISU. Most faculty likely purchased the desktop version. In the table above, this is identified as EndNote.
The ISU Library offers a free online option called EndNote Web--or sometimes identified as EndNote Basic as in the chart above. This free option is a much more limited tool, but it does the basics just fine! Check out the EndNote and EndNote Web guide for more information.
