Podcasting: A How to Guide

This guide is meant to help users get started with podcasting.

Podcast Components

The key elements of a Podcast intro are:

  • Welcome- greet your audience, engage them, and invite them in.
  • Introduction- introduce yourself as the host and let your audience get to know you.
  • Description- let your audience know what your podcast is about in general so that they know about the podcast as a whole, not just as a single episode.
  • Call to Action- give your audience a signal that you're about to dive into the episode

After your general Podcast introduction, you'll want to be more specific about what will happen in the episode ahead. This might include:

  • Topic- let your listeners know what the specific topic of the episode is
  • Introductions- let the audience know who is participating in the podcast and what voices they might hear. It is helpful to have your guests speak so the audience can associate the voice with the name.
  • Key Elements- give your listeners a preview of any key elements or points they don't want to miss in the episode.

Your podcast may not have advertisers, but you may have sponsors or entities to thank. Consider the following:

  • Where did you record the podcast? Perhaps you should thank the organization, group, or campus building that provided the space.
  • Is this podcast for a class? Consider thanking or mentioning the class professor.
  • Did a librarian help you with the content? Consider thanking the library!
  • Do you have a Patreon? Thank your patrons.
  • Do you have other supporters? Consider thanking them!

Now it's time to dive in with the actual content of your show! Please see the content section for more information on how to create content for your podcast.

A general outro of your podcast might contain the following elements:

  • Thank you- to your audience or any sponsors.
  • Connect- mention any links for additional resources such as show notes or social media.
  • Interact- encourage your audience to subscribe and leave a review so they can interact with you.

Consider adding a teaser for your next episode. You might include the following:

  • Content of the next episode
  • Guests to expect
  • An audio clip
