-Sponsored by Committee on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, ISU Library

Welcome! This Guide was originally developed for a Spring 2018 book discussion series sponsored by the ISU Library's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee.  The Guide remains useful for its content, structure, and syllabus of additional relevant readings.  Want to host your own discussion series? Feel free to use / adapt our materials here for your own group discussions on Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist.  Just link, cite, and let us know how it goes!

For questions or comments on this Guide, please contact Susan Vega García.

Noted author and critic Roxane Gay will visit ISU to lecture on her best-seller collection of essays entitled "Bad Feminist" on April 5, 2018 at 8:00 pm in Great Hall, Memorial Union.

In preparation for her lecture, the Library's Committee on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is organizing and leading a discussion group comprised of library staff on selected essays from Bad Feminist.  We will explore issues of race, gender, sexuality, pop culture, films & tv, immigration, feminism, intersectionality, and much more.

The discussion group will meet weekly, and each week will explore a different topic area. The topics to be covered include:

  • Introduction to Bad Feminist & Identity
  • Gender & Sexuality
  • Race & Entertainment
  • Politics, Gender & Race
  • Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist ISU Lecture
  • Ames Public Library Panel on Bad Feminist
  • Reflection on what we've learned

Each session will be a facilitated discussion of selected essays, led by a member of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. Participants should read our Ground Rules prior to the sessions.

This LibGuide provides information on the discussion series and Roxane Gay's writings. Throughout the discussion series, participants can also help compile our #BadFeministSyllabus, an annotated bibliography of resources related to topics covered by the group.
