Zotero for Citation Management

Quick tips and helpful links for getting started with the open source citation manager, Zotero. Easily collect and organize your references, and generate dynamic citations and bibliographies as you write.

Zotero for mobile

Zotero can be used via a mobile app on iOS devices (iPhone and iPad). However, it is still possible to use Zotero with a non-iOS mobile device by using the Zotero website and bookmarklet, or some third-party solutions.

Third-party plugins

Because Zotero is open source, a number of third-party plugins that greatly expand its capabilities are available. Below are a few that may be of interest to ISU researchers. Use at your own risk: the ISU Library does not provide technical support for third-party plugins, though support may be available from plugin developers and other Zotero users.

ZotFile

ZotFile is a Zotero plugin that enables advanced management of your attachments. With ZotFile, you can automatically rename, move, and attach PDFs (or other files) to Zotero items; sync PDFs from your Zotero library to your (mobile) PDF reader (e.g. an iPad, Android tablet, etc.); extract annotations from PDF files; and more.

Zotero folder import

Zotero folder import allows you to import a folder of files from your computer into a Zotero collection hierarchy.

LaTeX and other plain text

Several plugins are available to make Zotero work more easily with LaTeX and other plain text tools. Below is a link to a tool that works (with the addition of a user-supplied script) with the Overleaf LaTeX editor.
