HIST 195: Introduction to History

This research guide is intended to support the course HIST 195 at Iowa State, with a focus on historical research and research methodologies.

Get help by talking to a librarian!

Talk with your Subject Librarian! Subject librarians are experts in a specific field who can help you navigate the databases and resources available for your area.

Get the most out of working with your librarian

Talk to them! When you send an email or schedule an appointment, let them know what you're working on. Here are some things it will be helpful for them to know:

  • What your topic is.
  • What class your project is for.
  • What your project is - literature review, annotated bibliography, research paper, etc.
  • Any requirements you might have - number or type of sources, etc.
  • What (if anything) you have already tried - this will ensure they don't suggest something you've already tried.
  • When your assignment or project is due.

Library Services

Iowa State University Library offers a variety of services to help you with your research. A few of these are outlined below.

Live Chat

live chat button

The Iowa State University Library offers a live chat feature Monday through Friday, from 9am to 5pm. The chat is staffed by a revolving team of subject librarians who can answer questions about research in the library. You can access the chat via the "Live Chat" bookmark button on the bottom of the library website.

Workshops

Each semester, the University Library publishes a list of workshops available to students, faculty, and staff. The types of content covered vary, but each semester there is at least one workshop related to citation management, publishing, or research.
