File Management

Tips for managing digital files by the Iowa State University Library

Document your decisions

After you've taken the time and effort to create an organized file management system, be sure to document your decisions. Documentation will help current and future users of the system to follow the guidelines you've established.

This section is split into five pages:

  • README files: how to alert users to important information about your system
  • File system table: how to summarize key information about your system
  • File lists: how to use shell commands to generate a list of files in your system
  • Folder trees: how to use shell commands to generate a visualization of folders in your system
  • Command line quick start: how to open a shell at the appropriate location on your computer
