Red Delicious Apples
Originated from Jesse Hiatt's orchard in Peru, Iowa (in Madison County) in 1872. In 1892, he entered it in a contest as "Hawkeye." Stark Nurseries bought the rights and renamed it Stark Deliciious. In 1914, it was renamed Red Delicious. Today’s variety bears little resemblance to the 1872 original.
Sliced Bread
Was invented by an Iowan. Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the automatic bread slicer in 1912, but it was destroyed in a fire. In 1927, he created a version that not only sliced the bread, but also wrapped it. It was first used commercially in 1928.
