The Loneliness Crisis: The Lonely Homepage

A curated bibliography including various perspectives, genres, and disciplines.

How could there possibly be a “loneliness crisis”? They are all so happy. Do university marketing/advertising strategies set unrealistic expectations?

Let’s explore the literature on the topic.

  • Why is there a loneliness crisis?
  • What, if anything, can university employees do?
  • Regardless of how it started, how does loneliness affect our teaching?
  • How does it affect students psychologically, emotionally, and socially?
  • How does it affect their studies, their academic goals?

How to explore this topic with intention and efficiency

The Bare Minimum, imo

  • Watch 2 videos
  • Read 2 encyclopedic entries (look at source titles to gain diverse angles)
  • Read 2 monographs (at least 1 should be from psych/soc)
  • Read 20-40 abstracts
  • Read 2 articles in full

apparently I like the number 2? huh, I usually work in threes... :p

The videos, encyclopedic entries, abstracts, and articles will quickly let you dive in, while the monographs will add depth to specific areas of your personal interest. This combination of quick satisfaction and targeted depth is a good entry point to the topic of loneliness. This strategy can be applied to learning most any topic. If you use this strategy you will can (depending on your selections. I encourage reading outside of your comfort zones) gain a diverse understanding of the topic in a relatively short amount of time.
