Maria Pearson, Hai-Mecha Eunka or Running Moccasins (1932-2003) was a Yankton Sioux activist who spent most of her married life in Iowa. She began work on demanding repatriation of indigenous remains in Iowa by confronting then Governor Robert Ray, sitting outside his office in protest, dressed in full regalia. Her protests and ensuing dialogue with the Governor led to Iowa becoming the first state in the nation to pass an indigenous Burials Protection Act in 1976. Maria then began organizing national efforts that led to the creation and passing of the national Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Learn more about her amazing story and influence through the resources below.
