NIH Public Access Policy: for Researchers and Authors

exemptions to policy

There are several different types of publications that are exempt from the public access policy. However, if they are associated with your grant, they still need to be reported to the NIH, through either the eRA Commons or an NCBI account (directional video here). In general, if an article/publication is not in a peer-reviewed journal, then it does not have to be submitted to PMC. The following exemptions also hold:

  • A book chapter
  • Conference Proceedings
  • Review article that is non peer-reviewed
  • "news" item, even if it's in a peer reviewed journal (e.g., "News and Updates" in Nature)
