Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) was a prominent early advocate for transgender rights and an outspoken community activist working on causes including poverty, homelessness, addiction, and food insecurity, recognizing in particular the disproportionate impact of these on nonbinary and transgender people. She was born in New York City and was of Puerto Rican and Venezuelan heritage. Long marginalized by straight and gay communities for her own transgender identity, her many contributions are being recognized and she has now gained prominence as a pioneering icon and "the Rosa Parks of the transgender movement."
