This guide introduces students in ME 202 to finding and using library resources for mechanical engineering research, and how library research skills support their professional goals.

Research life hacks

The tools on this page will make it easier for you to connect with and use materials in the ISU Library's collections.

LibKey Nomad

LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that simplifies and streamlines access to the ISU Library's subscription resources. Adding this extension to your browser enables one-click access to full text of articles from publisher pages, PubMed, Google, Wikipedia, and more, with no need to start at the library website. If direct access is not available, it automatically loads and fills out the Interlibrary Loan request form for you.

Zotero

Zotero is an open source citation manager that describes itself as a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share research. Available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, it integrates with Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs; supports thousands of citation styles; flags retracted items; and more. In short, it makes collecting and citing references a lot easier.

Interlibrary Loan

Never pay out-of-pocket for an article again! You can request anything from articles to entire books through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and we will get them for you from another library. ILL can get almost anything, and there's no fee for ISU students. (Turnaround time is 24 hours/1 business day for article or chapter PDFs, around 1 week for a book.)

Pro tip 1: If you just need a chapter of a book for a class, you can request a PDF through ILL and avoid having to buy the entire book!

Pro tip 2: You can request chapters and articles in the ISU Library's print collection, and we'll send you a PDF copy.
