Authors' Rights: Publishing, Copyright, & You

A guide to resources for the "Publishing, Copyright, and You" Library Workshop

Evaluate your options

Would you move into an apartment without inspecting the lease carefully to know what rights you have? What happens if you want to hang pictures on the wall, or paint a room? Do you have the rights to do that?

As an author or future author, it's important for you to research how journals you're considering handle copyright of the articles they publish, and to know what rights they would allow you as an author to maintain over your own works.

Evaluate Reach with Ulrichsweb

Okay, now that you've got some journals in mind, you need to find quick facts about them, such as:

  • How long has the journal been around?
  • What topics do they publish?
  • Where are they indexed?

UlrichsWeb is a huge database!  After you do a search in UlrichsWeb, look for the Narrow Results column to find helpful ways to narrow your results.

You'll also see a helpful grid that categorizes your journal by type - for example, whether it is peer-reviewed, print or online, Open Access, and more.
